“The problem of course is that you simply can’t get the stock” ~, How often does one hear this plaintive lament from denizens of “The Trade”, many of whom really should know better, for the reality is that one can get all the stock that one wishes so long as one is prepared to go after it with the requisite degree of application.
As the ebb tide of fashion has receded, genuine antiques have, for the moment it is true, in some measure disappeared from view, whether they be sought in the saleroom or in those retail establishments presenting themselves as “Antique Centres”, to be replaced in large measure by a mixture of authentic “Vintage” items or by stock that has in recent days come to be described as “Retro”, which portmanteau term all too often includes goods whose age may be measured in weeks rather than decades.
From a commercial perspective, there is of course nothing at all wrong with this, just so long as the articles in question are correctly described and presented. Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder, and the market functions, in part at least to cater for the desires of the Customer.
The assiduous Buyer however, whether Dealer, Collector or Private Client wishing to furnish a home, is as able today to source period goods as was ever the case, often at prices considerably lower than a decade ago. All that is required is knowledge, patience and a willingness to face what, despite the perception of widespread falls in prices across the board, may on occasion appear to be daunting ticket prices ~ Happy Antiquing !
