The Swedish Nightingale

Jenny Lind AdvertThe Swedish opera singer, Jenny Lind { 1820 – 1887 }, one of the most highly regarded sopranos of the nineteenth century, is still fondly remembered today in operatic circles as the “Swedish Nightingale”.

Her hugely successful musical career, which included a 93 concert tour of the United States during 1850 – 52, promoted by the showman P.T. Barnum, enabled her to donate vast sums to charity, principally towards the provision of free schools in her native Sweden.

The Swedish NightingaleThe rare Antique Victorian Staffordshire Portrait Figure illustrated here, dated to circa 1847, depicts Lind in the role of Marie in Act 1 of Donizetti’s two act opera, “La fille du régiment”, { The Daughter of the Regiment }, which was first performed in Paris in February 1840.
