Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figure ~ “Richard III” ~ P E22 ~ H 1079

An attractive and well coloured Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figure of “Richard III” ~ P E22 ~ H 1079, based on Hogarth’s painting of the “nightmare” scene, “David Garrick as Richard III” { 1745 }, now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The King sits, bare-headed on a low seat in a tent, his right hand raised, he wears a chain and order pendant from his neck. In the larger versions of this figure, he wears an ermine-edged gown, over a jerkin, doublet and hose. In this, the smallest of the three sizes known to have been produced, the ermine trim is absent, as is the garter below his left knee. Untitled, this figure has an original firing crack at the neck, and, somewhat surprisingly, the reverse bears the impressed numeral 4.

Height ~ 17.20 cm. / 6.75 inches ~ Width ~ 12.70 cm. / 5.00 inches ~ Depth ~ 7.00 cm. / 2.75 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1850.
