Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer “Piping Shepherd” Pottery Plate

A fine Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Plate in the sought after “Piping Shepherd” pattern. This piece is unmarked, the Maker thus remaining at present unidentified, although, interestingly, a plate decorated in this pattern was sold by Christie’s, { Sale No. 6449 ~ Lot 62 ~ 14 April 1994 }, at their South Kensington, London rooms, where it was catalogued as potted by Edward and George Phillips of Longport, Staffordshire { 1822 – 1848 }. Decorated in an attractive shade of that dark blue so beloved of American collectors, with a scene of a shepherd playing his pipe to a lady seated among sheep. Two figures are crossing a bridge in the middle distance right, and there is a large house on the hill in the background, the whole set within a border of flowers and ivy leaves.
