Framed Oil on Canvas : Portrait of Peter Groome : signed W.O. Hutchison and dated 1931
An enchanting Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait of "Peter Groome", signed by the artist, William Oliphant Hutchison, later to become President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and knighted for his services to Art, the picture dated 1931. The sitter, Peter Groome was the son of theatrical producer, Stanley Groome and his wife, Mary, both of whom almost certainly moved in the same artistic and social circles as the artist, and thus it appears likely that this would have been the connection which led to the commissioning of the picture. We are advised by the vendors that later in life, Peter Groome, would become apprenticed to the noted Harpsichord Builder Thomas Goff of Pont Street, subsequently enjoying a successful career as a Restorer of such instruments. This rare early work by Hutchison, painted when the artist was just 42, illustrates to perfection those skills which would in the succeeding years propel him to the highest levels of public acclaim and distinction. The picture has been re-framed in sympathetic manner consistent with the designs of the period, however, the original, rather untidy frame remains available, should any purchaser wish to avail him / herself of it. This naturally would involve an additional Shipping Fee. Canvas size : Height : 61.00 cm. / 24.00 inches : Width : 45.75 cm. / 18.00 inches : Year : Dated 1931. Ref. OOCPPGSWOH/SB.

Antique English Victorian Semi - Porcelain Botanical Part Dessert Service by Grainger of Worcester
A most attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Semi - Porcelain Botanical Part Dessert Service of superb quality by George Grainger & Co. of Worcester, { 1839 - 1902 }. Comprising, one tall and two low tazzas together with six dessert plates, each piece painted with a different botanical subject, the whole series reserved within a band of "bleu celeste" and jewelled beaded border. On the face of it, one would regard this service as porcelain, and in cataloguing the set, we have taken our lead from Geoffrey Godden's "British Pottery and Porcelain Marks", where the author writes of Mark No. 1762, "Impressed or printed Initial Marks on the special "semi - porcelain" body, introduced in 1848...", since, although barely legible, each of the plates offered here bears such impressed marks, together with the pattern number 2423 painted in red. The majority of the pieces also bear the printed Retailer's Mark of James Green & Nephew of Queen Victoria St., London. Dimensions : Tall Tazza : Height : 10.20 cm. / 4.00 inches : Width : 23.50 cm. / 9.25 inches : Low Tazzas : Height : 6.30 cm. / 2.50 inches : Width : 23.50 cm. / 9.25 inches : Plates : Width : 23.50 cm. / 9.25 inches : Year : Circa 1850. CONDITION : Fine, with some minor rubbing / scuffing to the gilded edges and with three missing bead buttons. Detailed images of each piece available upon request. Ref. AEVSPBPDSGW/8.

Antique English Victorian Gaudy Welsh Oil Lamp
A large and imposing Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Oil Lamp, the decoration, principally in iron red and cobalt blue, very much in the style of the Mason's Ironstone patterns of the period, or perhaps inspired by the similar designs to be found on "Gaudy Welsh" pottery. The finely moulded column of dodecagonal form rising from a spreading foot to hold an integral pottery font, the good, clean burner with wick winder button marked "HINKS'S DUPLEX PATENT". Boldly painted with a series of large peonies and heightened with gilded arabesques, this is certainly one of the most impressive lamps to have passed through our stock in many a day. Offered here with a well matched burnt orange crimped shade of the period, beautifully etched with flowers and dragonflies. Replacement clear glass chimney, as one would expect. Height ~ 81.30 cm. / 32.00 inches ~ Width : 26.70 cm. / 10.50 inches ~ Depth ~ 26.70 cm. / 10.50 inches ~ Year ~ Lamp ~ Circa 1875 ~ Chimney ~ 20th Century. ~ Ref. AVGWOL/SB.

Antique English Victorian Moore Brothers Porcelain Oil Lamp
Quite delightful ! This fine and rare Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Porcelain Oil Lamp in cream and gilt by Moore Brothers of Stoke-on-Trent { 1872 - 1905 }, is an Interior Decorator's dream come true. The floral encrusted font rising from an elaborate base where three putti are hard at work producing Cupid's arrows in Vulcan's forge. A fine brass burner, the two wick winder buttons each marked with a sunburst device within the words BRITISH MADE and the letter F. The whole romantic ensemble topped off with a stunning scalloped green vaseline glass shade of the period. Signed upon the underside of the base in magenta with the underglaze printed Maker's Mark MOORE within a ribbon cartouche, together with the impressed marks, Moore, the letter V, the numeral 1, and what looks like an elongated tick. Some of that discolouration to the glaze so typical of Moore brothers output, but this in no way detracts from the beauty of this lovely old piece, minor restorations. Replacement clear glass chimney, as one would expect. Height ~ 62.25 cm. / 24.50 inches : Width ~ 21.65 cm. / 8.50 inches ~ Year ~ Lamp ~ Circa 1890 ~ Chimney ~ 20th Century ~ Ref. AVMBOL/SB.

Antique Dutch Delftware Polychrome Vase and Cover
This impressive Late 18th Century Antique Dutch Delftware Polychrome Vase and Cover of octagonal form was produced Circa 1775 and stands 47.00 cm. / 18.50 inches high. The decoration, in soft shades of blue, green, yellow ochre and aubergine depicts, on the obverse, a regal figure whom we believe to represent King Henri IV of France, attired in a suit of armour, whilst the sides and reverse are naively painted with sprays of flowers. The cover, which has undergone professional restoration, is surmounted by a finial in the form of a bird pecking a plum. The underside of the base bears an underglaze blue painted mark formed of the initials C.B. surmounted by a crown and a cross. This mark was, until recently, attributed to the Early 18th Century Brussels atelier of Corneille Mombaers and Thierry Witsenburg, but current scholarship has, so we understand, declared against this. An imposing and decorative piece of polychrome Delftware, fit to grace the finest collection. Height : 47.00 cm. / 18.50 inches : Width : 18.00 cm. / 7.00 inches : Depth : 16.00 cm. / 6.25 inches : Year : Circa 1775. Ref. ADDPVAC/11.
